The Edward Everett Square reconstruction is being undertaken by the Boston Public Works Department and its contractor Mario Susi and Sons. This is a $2.2 million improvement and began in the Spring of 2006 and the project is approximately 65% completed. The following is an update on the project:

–The contractor experienced delays during the Spring due to unforeseen extensive water and drainage issues. In addition, due to traffic volume the contractor has been limited in the hours allowed for construction at the site.

–The contractor has been working the last several Saturdays. The vast majority of work will be suspended during the winter months beginning in mid-November. Substantial work will resume in early April and the project is scheduled for completion in May of 2007.

–A large portion of this project involves underground work such as the water issues and underground conduit for street lighting, traffic loop detectors, and traffic signals.

–The contractor has installed approximately 50% of the new traffic signals. The other signals will continue to function until project completion.

–15 of the 24 new decorative street lights have been installed. The balance will be completed by mid-November.

–The temporary asphalt berm area was installed at the direction of the Transportation and Engineering Divisions to test the effectiveness of these dimensions for pedestrian and traffic movement. This location has been determined as functional and will be completed with the permanent materials.

–Much of the infrastructure has been installed including median islands near Store 24 and KFC, and sidewalk / planter area near Dunkin Donuts.

–April/May ‘07 work will include:
Completion of all concrete sidewalks, median, and planter areas.
Completion of traffic signals.
Installation of bricks by the Bricklayers Union.
Grinding and full resurfacing of the project roadways
Installation of signage, lane markings, and the decorative imprinted thermoplastic crosswalks.
Installation of artwork.
