"This is where Dorchester was first settled. This is where community happened. The meetinghouse was here. Most of the houses were close by. In earlier times, of course Columbia Road didn’t exist as it is now. Boston street was Boston street where you went to Boston, and Uphams Corner was much more important as a commercial center. This square was really just a crossroads, but it was near where everybody lived, and where Edward Everett's father built his house. It was the community. This is what is important. This was the place, and all activities started here."
