Artist Laura Baring-Gould with UMass intern Lia Rousett and Amy Grasso at Edward Everett Square with cardboard cut outs of pears

To properly evaluate the idea of a pear sculpture in Edward Everett Square, Laura worked with students at UMass Boston to create various sized 2 dimensional pears in cardboard.  Featured here were pieces 3’ and 5’ tall—which quickly established that the artwork needed to be much larger to complete against the traffic and movement of the intersection.

Ellen Berkland, caretaker at the nearby William Blake House, received 4 phone calls the day Laura and her students worked in the Square, each asking “Ellen, what are those girls doing with those pears up in the Square?”
