Baring-Gould’s studio with research on various military identification tags (Dog Tags)
To properly recreate the dog tags in the sculpture, Baring-Gould conducted research on the various styles of dog tag identification used by all 5 branches of the US military, from the Revolutionary War to the present. Each tag was recreated in wax, and hand stamped with the name of a Dorchester citizen who served during times of war and conflict. A citizen advisory committee (Gloria Vieira, Dan Houton, Karen McNutt, John Scannell, Earl Taylor and John McColgan, Chair) provided names of over 150 Dorchester soldiers to be included in the artwork.
