Artwork of worn bronze shoes to honor perseverance and determination

This artwork features a pair of worn and well-traveled shoes, and honors the determination of those who have embarked on a journey or traveled to Dorchester in search of a new home. The first quote recalls Henry Knox’s epic journey hauling cannons from Fort Ticonagroa through Edward Everett Square which were used to intimidate the British and hasten their evacuation of Boston in 1776:

“In the morning we set out …I almost perish’d with the cold.”
Henry Knox, Revolutionary War, 1775.

Artist Laura Baring-Gould collected the second quote from personal journals that depicted the arrival of early immigrants to Boston:

“She arrived with her money hidden in the soles of her shoes.”
Immigrant, 1851.
