Brick inscriptions: Community voices

Master bricklayers and apprentices of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Local 3 generously donated their time and expertise to install all 8,000 bricks in the Square. Without their help, this aspect of the project would have been impossible! Several bricks honor their work and skill including: “We build Cathedrals” and “God is in the details”.

On other occasions, individuals supported the inscription of bricks for individuals who had helped with the square, but could not afford to sponsor a brick of their own. “Nothing changes if nothing changes” was suggested by volunteers with Boston Handiworks, a social enterprise program of Pine Street Inn who assisted with cleaning the square. The brick beside it “Uniquiti, A place of Shadows” refers to the place name given to Dorchester by the early Ponkapoag people.
