The artworks in Edward Everett Square: Honoring community experience while creating landmarks for the future
The historic monuments in Edward Everett Square, manifest in the large bronze pear and ten satellite artworks, are objects of community pride. The changed square demonstrates the power of a committed citizenry to reclaim their public spaces where public art celebrates collective experience. While many residents were initially surprised to learn that farmland and orchards once covered Dorchester, many residents now know about the Clapp Pear and it’s legendary hard skin with sweet interior. The artwork has become a local landmark that allows current and future generations to learn about, and value, their community.
