Edward Everett Square in 2004
Despite its significance as a crossroads and its many important historic associations, Edward Everett Square declined into an intersection characterized by chaotic traffic, abundant asphalt, dangerous crossings for pedestrians and a lack of community character. Long-term residents saw the existing physical environs of the Square as degraded and absent of any hint of connection to its profoundly historic past. Representing several local community organizations, the Edward Everett Square Project Committee sought to reclaim this important community gateway, by bringing a measure of order to its unruly traffic, and a dose of beauty and culture to its environment.
